Weekly Update 10/26/20

Weekly Update 10/26/20

School Community – Flu Vaccination and COVID – Alberta Health Services has released some guidelines for students that will be getting their Flu vaccination.  The recommendations concern the fact that some students may experience COVID like symptoms after their vaccination.  AHS is recommending that if a student becomes symptomatic after vaccinations they are to isolate, however, if those symptoms resolve within 48 hours of the vaccination that they no longer need to isolate and can return to regular life.  THS would then advise to have students vaccinated on a Thursday or Friday so that if they become symptomatic it would be over the weekend and if symptoms resolve would be able to return to school on Monday.

School Community – Sick Sibling – Just a reminder that if a child’s sibling is sick they do not need to stay home and isolate if they themselves are not exhibiting symptoms of illness.  If the sick sibling or other close contact tests positive for COVID-19, then and only then would the sibling need to isolate.

School Community – Illness and Classwork/Homework – All of the teachers at TJSHS are updating their google classrooms daily.  If your child is away for any length of time their homework and daily notes can be found on google classroom.  Students are expected to keep up on their work while they are away from school.  Students and parents can also email individual teachers regarding progress.  All teacher emails can be found on the TJSHS website: tjshs.blackgold.ca/about/staff-contacts

School Community – Grad Poinsettia Fundraiser – The grads have started their fundraiser for Poinsettias.  If you are interested in supporting the grad class and ordering you can either order directly from a graduate or use their online ordering link.  Online Ordering Link.  Orders are due Tuesday November 17 at 12:00am.  The link does say for the Student Union, however all profits from this fundraiser will go to the graduates.

2021 Grad Community – Grad President – Congratulations to McKinlee Coles on being selected as the 2021 Grad president.  She will work with Mrs. van Steenis, Ms. Gramlich and Ms. Wohlgemuth and the rest of the 2021 class and parents to prepare for grad 2021.

School Community – School Fees – Fees have now been added to your parent portal on PowerSchool.  If you don’t have access to PowerSchool please contact the office.

School Community – Halloween – Just a reminder that students are allowed to dress up this Friday October 30th.  We ask that parents ensure that costumes are school/workplace appropriate.  Please note that no full face coverings or fake weapons are allowed.  Non-medical face masks are still a requirement for the day as per CMOH order 33.

School Community – Dressing for Weather – Please make sure that you are sending your student to school dressed appropriately, we have noticed students getting off of buses or walking to school in minus temperatures without coats, etc.  Risks of frostbite etc are going to become more likely as temperatures get colder.

School Community – Lockers – In the same vein as above BGSD has given schools the opportunity to use their hallway lockers.  At this point the lockers at TJSHS will remain out of use.  As weather changes we may open the usage of lockers to store coats/boats etc.  However, with cohorting daily time-wasted at lockers currently outweighs the need of said locker.

School Community – Marks reminder – second reminder that quarter 1 ends on November 6th when teacher marks are due.  That means that individual teachers may be setting deadlines as early as Friday October 30th to hand materials in for marks during quarter 1.

School Community – 2019/2020 Yearbooks – The 2019/2020 yearbooks have arrived.  If you haven’t already purchased one we have some extra copies for purchase.  You can purchase these either online or at the office for $50.

School Community – Picture Day – Just a reminder that school pictures are on November 19th.  Last week’s update had a schedule for class times.

School Community – FCSS Babysitting Course – This was also in our newsletter earlier this month, but Thorsby FCSS is holding a babysitter training course November 7th.  Please see that attached poster for more information. Poster

School Community – Upcoming Break – Just a reminder that there is no school on November 11 (Remembrance Day) or November 12,13 (Mid Term Break)

Grad Fundraiser

Our grads are selling poinsettias and other holiday greenery as part of their fundraising campaign. Check out the details here or talk to any of our grads. Orders are due November 17 and will be delivered to the school on December 1. These are always very healthy, beautiful and long lasting.

Weekly Update 10/19/20

Grade 7 – Catch up on grade 6 immunization – AHS is scheduled to be at the school on Monday afternoon to get the grade 7 class caught up on their immunizations.  If your student is on distance learning and would like to attend to get their immunization please call the school in the afternoon to set up a time.

School Community – Picture day – Following the guidelines set in place by our Board of Education our picture day was moved to November 19.  Retakes will be scheduled for sometime in December.  Distance learning students will be included in their own time slot, please notify school if your distance learning student will be attending picture day.

Current schedule for pictures: Grade 12(8:35-9:15), Grade 11 (9:20-10:00), Grade 10 (10:05-10:45), Grade 9 (10:50-11:30), Grade 8 (12:15-12:45), Grade 7 (12:50-1:30), Distance Learning (1:45-2:30).

Grad Community – Grad Pictures – Scheduled for November 23rd.  Your student has the schedule on their Grad 2021 google classroom.

School Community – PTA Meeting – There will be a PTA meeting on Tuesday October 20.  This is the AGM for the school council.  It will be conducted over zoom.  If you are interested in attending you can contact the school for the meeting link.

School Community – Hotmail and problems with school messenger – One issue that schools have seen in regards to contacting parents through school messenger is that if the parent has a hotmail account some of the emergency broadcasts can be flagged as Spam.  If you have a hotmail account linked to your students account it might be a good idea to set a school messenger message as a safe contact.

Grade 11 and 12 Community – Diploma exams – As you may have heard the Education Minister announced last week that diploma exams for quartered classes have become optional for students to write.  At this time diploma exams for TJSHS classes ending in January are still required as they have not been deemed optional by the Minister.  If this changes we will make sure to update the school community

School Community – Reminder about AHS protocols – If your child is sick with one of the top 5 COVID-19 related symptoms: Runny nose; sore throat; cough; fever; shortness of breath/difficulty breathing.  They are legally required to self-isolate for 10 days after the onset of symptoms or symptoms clear whichever is longer. If they are tested for COVID-19 and are negative they no longer need to isolate, however the school would request that you keep them home until symptoms resolve as to not pass the cold to another student/family and start the process for them.  Please refer to the AHS Symptom Flow Chart for more information.

If a student presents with other symptoms: chills; painful swallowing; stuffy nose; headache; muscle or joint ache; feeling unwell, fatigue or severe exhaustion; nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or unexplained loss of appetite; loss of sense of smell or taste; conjunctivitis (pink eye).  It is advised that students stay home to minimize their contact with others and can return to school when their symptoms are gone.  Please refer to the AHS Secondary Symptoms Flow Chart for more information.

School Community – Allergies – Just a reminder that if your student has allergies please provide a school with a doctors note outlining the symptoms of those allergies.  These can then be considered a student’s baseline.

School Community – End of Quarter 1 soon – Just a reminder that marks for quarter 1 will be finalized in about 3 weeks.  You should be logging on and checking your child’s marks in PowerSchool.  If you don’t have access to your PowerSchool please contact the school office.

Weekly Update 10/14/20

THS Community,

School Community – Mental Health Literacy – There is a free mental health literacy session put on by the Mental Health Capacity Building team of Black Gold School Division.  The session is virtual on October 15th from 6:30-8:00.  Here is the poster and the Registration Link

School Community – Parent Teacher Interview change – PTIs will take place during the week of November 16th-20th.  They will be completed by requesting a phone call from your students teacher.  More information will follow on how to book time slots.  As always if you have something to discuss prior to that week please either email your students teacher or call the school to contact them.

Junior High Community – seat plan changes – since the beginning of the school year classes at the junior high level have been sitting in alphabetical order.  In some classes these plans have changed in an effort to maximize student participation and learning.  Seat plans will be adjusted throughout the school year.

School Community – Halloween costumes –  On October 30th students will be invited to dress up during the school day for Halloween.  Parents should discuss costume choices with their students to make sure that they are appropriate for school/a place of work.  We ask that costumes allow students to be identifiable (no full face masks), not include weapons, and be culturally appropriate/sensitive.  Please note that a non-medical face mask will still be required to be worn during parts of the school day in accordance with CMOH order 33.

School Community – Safety drills – We will soon be completing our Hour Zero safety drills (fire drills, lockdowns, etc.).  These will be completed class by class instead of as a whole school to minimize movements.

School Community – Order 33 – As we continue into the school year we have now seen 3 of the BGSD schools needing to isolate classes due to cases of COVID-19.  We are all in this together and as such need to continue to follow CMOH order 33 which stipulates that students need to wear non-medical face masks at school.  Students are permitted to take off their masks if they are seated in their classrooms in rows.  Students need to wear their masks in class if they are turning to talk to other students in the classrooms.

School Community – PTA meeting – There is a PTA/School Council meeting next Tuesday October 20.  If you would like to attend virtually please contact the school for the zoom meeting link.

Have a great short week.

Weekly Update

THS Community,

Here are a couple of updates for this Monday

School Community – COVID 19 Update – some may have heard that Black Gold had its first confirmed case of COVID-19.  This did occur in the city of Beaumont.  As it does not affect TJSHS that is all in the information that will be shared at this time.

With that being said here are a couple of reminders based on Alberta Health Services recommendations:

If a student has COVID-19 symptoms they are legally required to isolate for a minimum of 10 days if they have a cough, fever, shortness of breath, runny nose, or sore throat that is not related to a pre-existing illness or health condition.  The mandatory isolation period is 10 days from the start of symptoms, or until symptoms resolve, whichever takes longer.

If a student has symptoms and has tested negative for COVID-19 and have no known exposure to the virus, they are not legally required to isolate. However, it is important to stay home until their symptoms resolve so that they do not infect others.  This is important as we don’t want to start this process with another student/family in our school community.

If you have been a close contact of a person with COVID-19 you are legally required to isolate for 14 days.  If you become symptomatic during those 14 days you then need to start an isolation for a minimum of 10 days from the onset of symptoms or until symptoms resolve, which is longer.

If a student has a pre-existing condition (allergies) TJSHS would request that the student obtain a doctor’s note stating that the student has allergies and have a negative COVID-19 test result.  The allergy symptoms can then be exempted and the school will have documentation in the event another student/parent questions why a symptomatic student is at school.

If a family member has symptoms of COVID-19, other family members can still attend school as long as they themselves are not symptomatic.  If the family member tested positive for COVID-19 then the student would need to isolate as a close contact.

The following flow chart may assist you in deciding if your child should attend school on a given day.  Flow Chart

School Community – Early Dismissal – Just a reminder that it is early dismissal on Wednesday this week.  This changes our lunchtime and after school release.  Lunch will be from 11:06-11:48.  Dismissal time will be 2:23.

School Community – Fair Notices – This week we are going to see the Black Gold Speech Language Pathologist, Occupational Therapist and other specialized services start coming into classrooms, so we wanted to share with you the fair notice that these trained professionals may be entering your students classroom.  For more information please read the following link.  Fair Notice Link

Under the same idea TJSHS may also need to activate a Violence and Threat Risk Assessment during the 2020/2021 school year.  The fair notice for this is also available in the following link.  Fair Notice Link.  If you want to know more about the VTRA process in BGSD schools please see the following link.  VTRA Link

School Community – No School – Just a reminder that we will not have school on Monday (Thanksgiving Day) and Tuesday (Professional Development Day) next week.

School Community – Awards Night Postponed – Normally our TJSHS Awards night would be held on Friday this week.  Unfortunately this will be postponed until a later date.  Students that have won/earned awards will be contacted as soon as possible.
